Information

In 2006 there were estimated 3-5 million older adults in America were victims of some form of abuse. It is believed that for every case reported there might be as many as 5 cases not reported. Older adults themselves are unlikely to report abuse. They most often suffer in silence, unable to speak out to a society that does not listen well. It frequently occurs behind closed doors or in front of people who do not want to get involved.

Elder Maltreatment Family members commit approximately 90% of elder abuse and neglect. 66% of them are spouses or adult children. According to the Bureau of Justice statistics, 42% of murder victims over the age of 60 were killed by their children. Adults 80 years and older are 2 to 3 times more likely to be abused.

While neglect remains the most common type of elder abuse, including self-neglect, financial exploitation has seen a sharp increase and now accounts for approximately 13% of cases reported
